By Bicycle in Barcelona: Safety and coexistence manual

Riding on the road
· Ride carefully and respect the traffic regulations.
· Wherever possible, use the lane on the right, next to the kerb. If this is reserved (taxi, bus), ride in the next lane.
· Use bike paths and respect the specific signs for bicycles.
Safe distances
A car door that is suddenly opened or a pedestrian stepping of the pavement can mean having to make sudden movements. For the safety of everyone, always ride in the centre of your lane.
Pedestrians
When you ride on the pavement or in pedestrian areas, respect the right of way of pedestrians and adjust your speed in line with theirs, without exceeding 10km/h. Remember that the pedestrian always has right of way.
Bicycle maintenance
Before going out, check the tires, brakes and lights on your bike. Have your bike regularly serviced by a specialist in our bike shop. (more info here)
Manoeuvres
When overtaking or changing direction, do it gradually and safely, indicating the movements well beforehand and ensuring that you have been seen.
Be noticed
Don’t hesitate to use your bell or give a load vocal warning.
Use lights and reflective materials at night.
For peace of mind
Take out a civic responsibility insurance policy. The “llicència verda” (green licence) of the Catalan Cycling Federation (third party and legal defence insurance) only costs 12 euros per year.
The route
Choose the most appropriate routes (bike paths, streets with little traffic, etc.). When riding off-road, respect the natural environment. If your route is very long or it means using busy roads, try combining cycling with public transport. Map:Bike Paths Barcelona
Safety
Though you may decide not to wear a helmet; it is recommended for children. Real safety is based on the moderation of speed and respect amongst all road users. In the case of an accident, don’t touch the injured party, and find help from qualified persons; if you are the victim, don’t move; wait for medical assistance, even if you think it’s nothing serious.
Theft
Always lock your bike up and leave it in a place where there are many people. Lock it to something that’s permanently fixed to the ground and that’s rigid and difficult to break.
Use two locks: one to lock the front wheel and the frame to something fixed and rigid, and the other one to lock the saddle and back wheel to the frame. It’s not a bad idea to buy a second-hand bike if you are going to leave it in the street.
Contact with other cyclists
In order to be kept informed, to be able to channel complaints and proposals, and to promote the use of the bicycle, participate with the associations.
With more bikes in use, the safer the streets will be and the less pollution we’ll have to put up with.
